Boozer Lumber

Boozer Lumber was founded in 1946, and is celebrating 60 years in business in 2006. In the beginning, Boozer was organized to serve contractor customers who were building many new homes in the post war years. Mr. William L. Boozer, one of the founders, and the CEO from the beginning, was an engineer, former wood shop teacher, and home builder. He combined those talents to take Boozer Lumber into manufacturing wood products for home building. One of the first ventures was a millwork shop, building cabinets, windows, shutters, and pre-hung interior and exterior doors. He built one of the first door hanging machines in SC in his back yard at night. Then came a moulding machine and a planer. These two ventures proved too small to be economic, but Mr. Boozer kept on seeking efficiencies and new ways to do things. Mr. Boozer was inducted into the SC Housing Hall of Fame in 1995 as a pioneer in home building in South Carolina.

In the early 1950's the company entered the wood roof truss business, being the first in the area to market this new product to home builders. As new technologies emerged, the company stayed on top and expanded production. Then wall panels were added about 1959, and then total ‘packaged' homes using pre-built walls (panels), pre-assembled roof trusses, and pre-cut cornice and trim.

The company added consumer sales in the 1970's, and then in 1979, the original real estate, which had grown to 9 acres and 100,000 square feet of buildings was sold to the SC Highway Department to make way for an interstate highway, I-77. The company moved to its present location, at 1400 Atlas Road and launched an aggressive expansion program which has grown to 44 acres and 250,000 square feet under roof.

Today the company is a three division business, with a Home Center serving consumers, a Contractor Division servicing professional home builders, and a Component Division which manufactures wood wall panels, roof trusses, floor trusses, and does installation of these products on customer job sites. In addition to the main location at 1400 Atlas Road, the company also owns and operates a Peachtree Planning Center near I-26 on Harbison Boulevard in Columbia, featuring Doors and Windows by Peachtree, and kitchen cabinets by Decora and others.. This facility was relocated, enlarged and significantly upgraded in 1999. .

In 1995, Boozer opened its Home Design Center, a store within a store, at the Atlas Road location. This center shows a variety of materials installed in realistic settings for easy selection. The center features kitchens, baths, and Peachtree Windows and Doors.

Boozer's Component Division is one of the largest in SC, and is one of the most modern facilities of its type in the US. With over 17 engineers and specialists working in the estimating & design department, Boozer can tackle the most difficult jobs around.... and does! The component division ships all over South Carolina, and to nearby parts of Georgia and North Carolina.

The component division has manufactured over 45,000 apartment units since 1964, and several thousand single family houses. The single family and multi family areas are both growing rapidly, and the roof truss department was moved into a new facility in 1999.

A new service, called Boozer Building Systems now does field erection of the components manufactured in the plant's. This service is restricted to selected customers at the present time.

The founder, William L. Boozer and his wife, Virginia, owned and worked in the business until their passing in the late 1980's. Dale Boozer, their son, was company President from 1972 until December 2000, when he was designated Chairman of the Board, Secretary and Treasurer. Dale is the primary stockholder today. His son William is now working in the business. Robert S. (Bob) Jones is company President and CEO, and he is assisted by an able staff with many years experience. The company has several vice presidents covering aspects of the business such as operations, business development, strategic planning, and sales & engineering. The company was recently featured in an industry magazine called Structural Building Components.

The company plans to grow and prosper, not only by serving the local markets in central South Carolina, but also by continuing to supply components to other markets including Charlotte, Hilton Head, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Aiken, Augusta, Greenville, Asheville, Florence, Camden, Orangeburg and Savannah.
